Album Launch and West Coast Tour for UK/Santa Fe Post-Punk Band Venus Bogardus
February Release ‘Spitting at the Glass’ on New York Record Label Launches in Santa Fe, followed by 3-week Tour
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
SANTA FE, NM, JANUARY 10, 2010. Santa Fe post-punk trio Venus Bogardus (James Reich: guitar, vocals; Hannah Levbarg: bass, vocals; Luke Carr: drums) and Five03 Records (NYC) are pleased to announce the release of the new album, ‘Spitting at the Glass’, February 9, 2010. The hour-long album (CD-digipack/digital) comprises thirteen driven, memorable tracks that capture the band’s famous live energy, passionate performance and engaging song-writing. The CD will be available for purchase in Santa Fe at Santa Fe Hemp and Hasting’s Books and can be purchased on line at www.venusbogardus.com or www.five03.com. The album is available in digital format now, from major retailers including iTunes and Amazon. Retailers in other markets will be announced shortly.
The official release will be celebrated at a launch party at The Cowgirl Hall of Fame, Santa Fe, on Friday February 5th, followed immediately by a three week promotional tour of the west coast. The album release is supported by a radio and press campaign by Planetary Group (LA, Boston).
The west coast tour begins in Los Angeles on February 11th, and includes further dates in LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Olympia, San Jose, and more. The Spitting at the Glass tour also coincides with the west coast debut of the off-Broadway stage play The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, an adaptation of Ann Bannon’s classic pulp fiction novels from the late fifties/early sixties. Hannah explains: “We took the band’s name from a character in the fabulous lesbian pulp-fiction novel Beebo Brinker, and we got in touch with the author back in 2005 to tell her about it. She likes the band, and now her novels have been made into a stage play that debuted in New York in 2007. When the play opens in San Francisco on February 23rd, we will finally all be in the same place and we’ll be meeting Ann, at last, and playing for her and as many cast and crew members as we can cram into the club. It’ll be a riot.
Venus Bogardus draws on a background and continued work in the fields of experimental literature, feminism, and Dadaism. James says: “A band like ours works outside of the pervasive culture, but the very fact of being in band, or an artist, exposes you to certain commercial laboratories, the art circuit. Spitting at the Glass is about the experience of being inside and outside the store or laboratory windows.”
Spitting at the Glass was recorded, mixed and produced by Venus Bogardus at the recording studio of Warehouse 21, where James and Luke have also worked recording other local artists and offered classes and mentorship to local teens.
Founding members James Reich and Hannah Levbarg met in 2002 as fans of Richard Hell’s writing and music, fell in love, opened (and closed) a nationally acclaimed independent bookshop in Bath, England and began collaborating on Venus Bogardus songs in 2005. James is a published author and poet. Hannah, originally from Texas, is Richard Hell’s Web forum moderator (since 2003). Hannah and James moved to the US (Santa Fe area) in March 2009. The couple is fictionalized in the book Julie & Julia (Little Brown, US/Penguin, UK) by Julie Powell, now a major motion picture.
